Abstraction and the Everyday in Latin American Art A discussion moderated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill
Tuesday, November 17, 2015
REDCAT - Roy and Edna Disney / CALARTS Theater
CALART's Downtown Center For Contemporary Arts
Los Angeles, CA, USA
To usher in the new SPACE Collection of Latin American Art exhibition space in Irvine, REDCAT and the collection are holding a series of roundtables on the subject of contemporary abstraction and its relevance across cultures, focusing in particular on Latin America. Introduced by CalArts President Steven D. Lavine, the inaugural panel considers assumptions about the apolitical nature of abstract art, the difference between modern and contemporary forms of abstraction, and how the conceptual and multidisciplinary quality of today’s abstraction is embedded in the everyday. The distinguished panelists include SPACE Chief Curator Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, who serves as moderator; REDCAT Gallery Director and Curator Ruth Estévez; and artists Emilio Chapela, Rubén Ortiz-Torres and Mariángeles Soto-Díaz.

Monochrome Undone Curated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill
October 24, 2015 – April 1, 2016
SPACE, Irvine, CA
The monochrome as a focus in the SPACE Collection began in a spontaneous form and soon became a systematic field of research. This exhibition is about the contemporary monochrome in Latin America. The group exhibition Monochrome Undone addresses the contemporary monochrome in Latin America. This exhibition is organized into four different themes that have been conceived to create context and suggest interpretations that otherwise might be illegible.
